The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that Goldman had held "preliminary internal discussions" in recent years about splitting off its commodities business. The newspaper cited people briefed on the discussions in its report.
"While we constantly evaluate all our businesses, senior management never seriously looked at spinning out all or part of our commodity business," Goldman Sachs spokeswoman Sophie Bullock said in an email.

The Bank Holding Company Act allows banks to trade in physical commodity markets, but restricts their ownership of the underlying assets.

Four UA faculty members were among 46 faculty and administrators from Southeastern Conference universities selected as 2012-13 SEC Academic Leadership Development Program?fellows, the SEC announced.
The SEC Academic Leadership Development Program (ALDP) is a professional development program that seeks to identify, prepare and advance academic leaders for roles within SEC?institutions and beyond. It has two components: a university-level development program designed by each institution for its own participants and two, three-day, SEC-wide workshops held on specified campuses for all program participants.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has awarded a Susan Harwood Targeted Topic Training Grant to the College of Continuing Studies. CCS was also awarded the grant in 2010.
Targeted Topic Training Grants support the development of quality occupational safety and health training materials and programs that address workplace hazards and establish?prevention strategies.
CCS, a nationally recognized leader in the area of safety and health management systems, will use the grant to develop a training program to teach workers and managers how to implement an effective ?Injury and Illness Prevention Program? in their workplace, a top OSHA priority.
?This grant will enable us to teach employers proven strategies for preventing injuries and illnesses through implementation of an effective safety and health management system?in their workplace, ?said Darrell Dechant, UA SafeState?executive director.
There will be no charge for the program to companies in both general industry and construction throughout Alabama and the entire southeastern region. The training will be especially valuable to small and new businesses, businesses with young workers, and high-hazard businesses. Training materials will be provided in Spanish.

Novel Coronavirus Recently Detected | Travel Insurance Advice
The CDC recommends travelers take precautions to help prevent the spread of germs and protect against illnesses.
Another case of a new coronavirus, causing acute respiratory syndrome, has been reported to the World Health Organization (WHO). The first case occurred in June in Saudi Arabia, while the most recent case was reported in September when a person from Qatar was infected after traveling to Saudi Arabia.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, public health authorities are closely monitoring respiratory illnesses to find out if there are other cases of this new coronavirus in addition to the two cases reported so far. A coronavirus is also what caused the SARS epidemic in 2003.
Although little is known about how the virus spreads, the CDC recommends travelers take these precautions to help prevent the spread of germs and protect against illnesses:
1. Wash hands often or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer
2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
3. Avoid close contact with sick people
4. Stay up to date with shots, and get any additional shots at least 4-6 weeks before travel
5. Persons who develop acute respiratory illness within 10 days after returning from Saudi Arabia or Qatar should consult a physician and mention their recent travel

ND man sells McJordan barbecue sauce for $10,000
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) ? A man who used to own McDonald's restaurants in North Dakota is about $10,000 richer after selling a 20-year-old container of McJordan barbecue sauce to a buyer in Chicago.
The sauce was used on McJordan Burgers, named for basketball icon Michael Jordan. The promotional item was sold in limited markets for a short time in the 1990s, when Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships.
Mort Bank, of Bismarck, saved the gallon jug of sauce after selling his McDonald's restaurants in Bismarck-Mandan and Minot in 1996.
"It was in my basement and I would look at it occasionally," he told The Bismarck Tribune. "I thought it would be worth something someday."
Bank advertised the sauce on eBay, saying: "A once in a lifetime chance to own the rarest of rare Michael Jordan and McDonald's collectible!" It sold for $9,995 Monday night to a buyer from Chicago whom Bank has not identified.
Bank told the Chicago Tribune that the buyer was not Jordan himself. Jordan opened a steakhouse in Chicago last year.
"I'm sure he's a Bulls or Michael Jordan fan, and hopefully he's not going to put it on his ribs or his burger," Bank told KXMB-TV of the buyer. "But it's up to him; he can do whatever he wants with it."
Bank said he has at least three storage units full of McDonald's memorabilia and other collector's items that he has been selling on eBay for three years. He has sold items to buyers as far away as China, Japan, Brazil and Europe, though never for as much money as the sauce garnered.
"I'm pretty ecstatic," he told the Bismarck Tribune. "You never know what is going to be a hot item."

Family of Mexico teen shot by U.S. Border Patrol to sue: lawyer
MEXICO CITY |
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The family of a Mexican teen shot dead when the U.S. Border Patrol opened fire on a group of rock throwers in Mexico last week is planning to bring a lawsuit alleging excessive use of force, Mexican authorities said on Monday.
The Border Patrol said an agent in Nogales, Arizona, opened fire across the border into Mexico late last Wednesday night. Mexican authorities said 16-year-old Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez was shot dead in the incident.
A lawyer for Mexico's Public Ministry in Nogales said attorneys for Elena Rodriguez' family would lodge a civil suit against the Border Patrol in the United States seeking unspecified damages for excessive use of force with fatal consequences.
"They are not specifying an amount, but it will be based on the boy's age ... and the earnings he will not receive," Manuel Iniguez Lopez told Reuters. He gave no indication of when the lawsuit would be filed.
Iniguez said the legal action would also push for punishment for the Border Patrol agent or agents responsible for the death of Elena Rodriguez, who was shot seven times in the back.
The incident began shortly before midnight on Wednesday when Border Patrol agents responded to reports of two suspected smugglers in Nogales and watched as they dropped drugs on the Arizona side of the border.
The smugglers then fled back across the border into Mexico and "began assaulting the agents with rocks," the Border Patrol said in a written statement. An unnamed agent opened fire after the suspects refused orders to stop, the patrol said.
The Border Patrol on Monday declined to comment, saying the agency did not have anything to add to the original statement it made last week.
Manuel Johnson, a spokesman in Phoenix for the FBI - which is investigating the shooting - declined to comment, saying the probe is on-going. Calls to two attorneys representing the Elena Rodriguez family in the United States were not immediately returned on Monday.
Elena Rodriguez was the second Mexican teenager shot dead by the Border Patrol in the Mexican border city in less than two years. In January 2011, an agent fired into Mexico, killing 17-year-old Ramses Barron of Nogales.
News pictures taken shortly after the shooting showed Elena Rodriguez' apparently lifeless body lying face down on the sidewalk a few yards south of the border fence, which consists of parallel steel barriers.
The shooting brought sharp criticism from Mexico's Foreign Ministry, which said the initial report "creates serious, new doubts about the use of lethal force by U.S. Border Patrol agents, something that both the Mexican government and society strongly deplore and condemn.
"It is imperative that the relevant U.S. authorities proceed with a timely and transparent investigation, and take it to its ultimate consequences," the ministry said in a statement.
The teenager's shooting came more than a week after a Border Patrol agent was shot and killed near the U.S.-Mexico border in an apparent friendly fire incident.
Nicholas Ivie, 30, was responding to a tripped sensor near Naco, Arizona, in an area well-known for smuggling activities. Another agent was shot and wounded, and a third agent was unharmed.

Scientists studying the Atlantic sturgeon, one of the oldest species of fish in the world, have found evidence that the James River population in Virginia spawns in the fall, according to scientists at the Virginia Commonwealth University Center for Environmental Studies and VCU Rice Center.
The finding challenges the longstanding view that this specific species only spawns in the spring and may ultimately lead to the development of guidelines and protections for future management and recovery of the fish. Experts assume that there is spring spawning here in the James River, just as there is one in the Hudson River and in some of the few remaining other rivers with the fish. Therefore, there may be some unique ecological trait of the James River yet to be determined and understood.
Little is known about the biology and life history of the sturgeon. There has been a significant decline in the number of fish in the past 100 years, due largely to overharvesting and the construction of dams that have altered its habitat. Between 1900 and 1920, nearby fisheries collapsed and the James River population was assumed to be extirpated as recently as 10 years ago. All populations of Atlantic sturgeon were given protection under the federal Endangered Species Act earlier this year. The James River fish are considered to be endangered.
In a new study published online this month in Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, a journal of the American Fisheries Society, researchers report empirical evidence of fall spawning by the Atlantic sturgeon in the James River in Virginia. During the three-year study, the team captured and observed 125 adult Atlantic sturgeons to determine sex and stage of maturity, track movement of adults via ultrasonic tags and collect data and examine seasonal frequency of reported vessel strikes on sturgeon.
In the study, breaching of adult sturgeon was reported by a number of fishers, guides and watermen starting in August 2010 and lasting for several months. One female that was captured in the three-year window showed signs consistent with female sturgeon that had spawned recently.
One notable observation ? following the publication of the study ? was a spawning female sturgeon that was captured and released at the end of September 2012 near Hopewell, Va.
"There is still a lot about this population of Atlantic sturgeon that we do not know," said co-author Greg Garman, director of the VCU Center for Environmental Sciences.
"We're still in discovery mode and as we uncover new things we'll be much better able to protect and restore it. We need to learn how we can share this part of the James River with this iconic and now federally protected species," he said.
According to Garman, the VCU research team will next identify critical habitats used by Atlantic sturgeon in the James and try to understand more about the biology and ecology of young sturgeon, which reside in the river for several years before starting oceanic migrations. Research will focus on effective management and recovery of this unique species.
There are approximately 20 different species of sturgeon worldwide and almost all of those are in peril of some form. Individual populations within the species have been extirpated - completely lost beyond recovery.
