Goldman says "never seriously" looked at selling commodities business

(Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Group Inc said on Tuesday the bank's senior management had never "seriously" looked at spinning off all or part of its commodities business, as the bank faces tougher regulations that restrict its trading.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that Goldman had held "preliminary internal discussions" in recent years about splitting off its commodities business. The newspaper cited people briefed on the discussions in its report.

"While we constantly evaluate all our businesses, senior management never seriously looked at spinning out all or part of our commodity business," Goldman Sachs spokeswoman Sophie Bullock said in an email.

The news comes as Morgan Stanley , Goldman's traditional rival in commodity markets on Wall Street, is weighing a possible sale of a majority stake in its commodities business to Qatar's sovereign wealth fund.

Wall Street banks, including Goldman, Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan , face tougher regulatory restrictions on proprietary trading under the Volcker rule contained in the Dodd-Frank Act.

Their ownership of physical commodity assets, like power plants, oil storage tanks and metals warehouses, are also in jeopardy after Goldman and Morgan Stanley converted to Bank Holding Companies at the peak of the financial crisis.

The Bank Holding Company Act allows banks to trade in physical commodity markets, but restricts their ownership of the underlying assets.

The Volcker rule limits banks to largely trading on behalf of their clients.

Four UA faculty members were among 46 faculty and administrators from Southeastern Conference universities selected as 2012-13 SEC Academic Leadership Development Program?fellows, the SEC announced.

The SEC Academic Leadership Development Program (ALDP) is a professional development program that seeks to identify, prepare and advance academic leaders for roles within SEC?institutions and beyond. It has two components: a university-level development program designed by each institution for its own participants and two, three-day, SEC-wide workshops held on specified campuses for all program participants.

University faculty chosen come from the areas of commerce, communications, education and biological sciences.

Dr. Brian Gray, associate dean of the Manderson Graduate School of Business in the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration, is also the James I. Harrison Family Teaching Excellence Faculty Fellow and?professor of statistics.

Dr. Jennifer Greer is chair of the journalism department and has served as director of the Knight Fellowship in Community Journalism master?s program for two years.?She teaches media writing, research methods, presentation methods, introduction to journalism and other courses.

Dr. Sandra Nichols joined the faculty in 2010 as head and associate professor of the special education and multiple abilities department in the College of Education. Throughout her career, she has held various administrative positions and received several leadership awards.

Dr. Patricia Sobecky, professor of biological sciences, is conducting research funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy. She is currently?working on the effects of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill on coastal Alabama sites.

CCS Awarded OSHA Grant to Improve Workplace Safety

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has awarded a Susan Harwood Targeted Topic Training Grant to the College of Continuing Studies. CCS was also awarded the grant in 2010.

Targeted Topic Training Grants support the development of quality occupational safety and health training materials and programs that address workplace hazards and establish?prevention strategies.

CCS, a nationally recognized leader in the area of safety and health management systems, will use the grant to develop a training program to teach workers and managers how to implement an effective ?Injury and Illness Prevention Program? in their workplace, a top OSHA priority.

?This grant will enable us to teach employers proven strategies for preventing injuries and illnesses through implementation of an effective safety and health management system?in their workplace, ?said Darrell Dechant, UA SafeState?executive director.

There will be no charge for the program to companies in both general industry and construction throughout Alabama and the entire southeastern region. The training will be especially valuable to small and new businesses, businesses with young workers, and high-hazard businesses. Training materials will be provided in Spanish.

Each state organization (covering Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi) is invited to nominate one outstanding public relations educator. Horsley was named Educator of the Year by the Public Relations Council of Alabama prior to being nominated for the SPRF award.

Dr. Ken Wright, director of the sports management?program in the College of Human Environmental Sciences, has been named to the board of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.
