Innovation in the arts and entertainment ? Lidia Varbanova, PhD

There are plenty of innovative ideas raising daily all over the world. Innovation is a key tool of entrepreneurship, including for entrepreneurs who work in the arts, culture and entertainment industries. ?Thinking beyond the box? is a must in the competitive world we live in. It is important to not only be better than the competitors, but to do things differently, in a new or unusual way.

Below is a selection of several projects of entrepreneurs who connect art, music or entertainment with business, and create projects in a non-conventional way with the purpose to not only have a financial benefit but to also entertain audiences, create curiosity, bring elements of unexpected experiences. Making money, engaging audiences and helping artists comes in a package in these creative and innovative projects.

Pickup: a new economic platform for fans to support the creative industry on the web

The UK startup is currently offering free software to Mac, iPhone and iPad users ? although it intends to include other operating systems in the future. Once installed, it works in the background and keeps a private record of all media accessed by the user, creating a digital diary of music, video, podcast and e-book consumption held on Pikup?s servers. Those using the service can then pay a small monthly subscription to support the arts, with the twist being that their money will be split between the artists whose work they have been playing. Pikup analyses the collective listening and viewing habits of all of its users and allocates subscription funds appropriately. Media creators, meanwhile, will be able to create accounts in order to claim their income. Pikup also has plans to allow bands and filmmakers to have a say in regards to how much of the site?s funds goes to them and how much is used to monetize the company?s operations.

Pikup has taken the model of popular sites such as last.fm and discovered a way to fund artists based on how often their media is accessed by each individual, rather than relying on a one-off initial payment. Does this signal a shift towards fairer allocation of profit for artists?

Slowbizz aims to bring together music fans willing to host small musical events in their homes with talented artists willing to perform in such settings. Both artists and hosts must apply for membership on the site, but acceptance is not guaranteed, and Slowbizz says it takes its time deciding. Once accepted, however, both hosts and artists can join the network for free and begin making small concerts possible. Hosts pay EUR 150 to put on a concert, recoupable in the form of admission fees for attendees; they also provide accommodation and a meal for the artist, as well as transportation to the artist?s next local gig. Artists, in turn, receive that EUR 150 fee as a guaranteed payment, in addition to any donations or purchases patrons may make at the event. Slowbizz, meanwhile, in exchange for facilitating and promoting a run of gigs, collects a fee of EUR 100 per tour (which must consist of 20 dates as minimum), as well as EUR 30 per date played. This is deducted from the artist?s EUR 150.

Cycle-in Cinema

Magnificent Revolution?s Cycle-in Cinema taps the kinetic energy of its participants to power the entertainment. Viewers can simply ride to a screening on their favorite cycle, hook it into the on-site generator and start pedaling. While the resulting energy powers the performance, the movie?s soundtrack is broadcast using a wireless transmitter that can be heard by audience members via mobile phone or FM radio. Events are free, with a suggested donation of GBP 5; a variety of drinks and locally sourced snacks are typically for sale.

Imagine a Drive-In Cinema without the cars. Audiences cycle to the screening, hook their bikes into the generator and power the show. The new 20 bike generator is capable of? producing up to 1kW so that it can use a much larger projector and sound system. The Cycle-In Cinema is designed to educate and entertain. All the electricity for the screenings is produced by the cyclists. Audiences learn about energy consumption along the way using our unique display system to show how much power they are producing/consuming.

Lifestyle hotel focusing on music

Located directly on the banks of the river Spree, the Nhow Berlin bills itself as the only hotel in Europe offering two professional music studios. A dedicated music manager is on staff, as is a team drawing heavily from local music colleges. Regular live events and concerts take place in the hotel?s event spaces and terraces, while first-rate DJs are on hand in the bar. The music studios are operated in collaboration with Lautstark Music GmbH/Ren? Rennefeld, which also manage the legendary Berlin Hansa recording studios. The Nhow?s 304 rooms, meanwhile, are kitted out with iPod connections and more than 30 TV and 100 music radio stations integrated in a state-of-the-art entertainment system. Wireless Internet and more than 5,000 videos-on-demand are available in every room; Gibson guitars are even available through room service. One wall of the hotel?s exterior is also being designed through a collaboration with Berlin graffiti artists. Pricing for a weeklong stay in early December is about EUR 174 per night.
