Boyd, Clemson look to right the ship against Boston College

Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd will be without one of his favorite targets today against Boston College, as receiver Sammy Watkins will miss the game with a virus.

CLEMSON ? Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd felt hollow when the 17th-ranked Tigers lost at No. 4 Florida State last week. He took major steps to make sure he wouldn?t feel that away again today at Boston College.

Facts

TODAY'S GAME

No. 17 Clemson (3-1, 0-1 ACC) at Boston College (1-2, 0-1)
3:30 p.m., ESPN2, 93.3 FM
Line: Clemson by 9 ?.
Series record: Clemson leads 10-9-2.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
Clemson is seeking to bounce back from last week's 49-37 loss at No. 4 Florida State. The Tigers led 31-21 in the third quarter before the Seminoles put up four touchdowns down the stretch against a tiring defense that has struggled against the run all year long. Boston College is hoping to pull off an ACC surprise as it did in 2010's 16-10 victory over Clemson on Chestnut Hill.
KEY MATCHUP
Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins vs. Boston College's defense. Watkins missed the season's first two games because of suspension, and then tuned up for about a half in a win over Furman before facing Florida State. Watkins has 10 catches for just 76 yards and no touchdowns this season. Boston College has given up just 202 yards passing a game, fourth best in the ACC.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Clemson: QB Tajh Boyd had a record-setting season for the Tigers last year and has largely picked up where he left off in 2011. He's averaged 246 yards a game and has thrown nine touchdown passes, tied for second in the ACC.
Boston College: QB Chase Rettig is the ACC's surprise leader in passing yards per game and total offense. As Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said this week, "It's been a long time since we've seen them lead the league in passing."
FACTS & FIGURES
Clemson has lost two of three meetings in Boston since the Eagles joined the ACC in 2005 ... Boston College linebacker Nick Clancy leads the nation with more than 14 tackles per game. ... Clemson kicker Chandler Catanzaro has made his last 15 straight field goals, surpassing the school record of 14 straight held by former NFL kicker Obed Ariri in 1980. ... The Eagles had last week off after losing at Northwestern, 22-13 on Sept. 15. ... The winner of this game receives the O'Rourke-McFadden Trophy, an award named for Charlie O'Rourke of Boston College and Banks McFadden of Clemson. The two competed against each other in the 1940 Cotton Bowl.

Boyd called a players? only meeting once the team returned from Tallahassee, still stinging from the 49-37 defeat. He told the Tigers he didn?t want them to splinter or point fingers after the loss because there was plenty of time for the defending Atlantic Coast Conference champions to deliver on a big season.

For Boyd and the Tigers (3-1, 0-1 ACC), that starts this weekend against the Eagles (1-2, 0-1). The task got a bit harder Thursday when star receiver Sammy Watkins was ruled out because of an abdominal virus. He did not make the trip.

Clemson led Florida State by two touchdowns and was still ahead 31-21 midway through the third quarter when the Seminoles? offense started rolling. Florida State struck for four touchdowns to take control of the early season ACC Atlantic Division showdown.

Boyd said there were plenty of breakdowns on all sides of the ball. Clemson?s defense struggled to keep the Seminoles off the scoreboard and allowed 667 yards, the second-highest total in program history. The offense didn?t answer back during the decisive stretch. And Clemson?s special teams gave up several big plays, including a 90-yard kickoff return to Lamarcus Joyner during Florida State?s rally.

Everyone on the Tigers shares responsibility for the loss, something Boyd wanted to remind the players as they got ready for this week?s game.

?There?s no need for anything to try and divide us,? he said.

Boyd and the Tigers hope to prevent a lingering letdown and avoid last season?s late slide when Clemson opened 8-0. But a 31-17 defeat at Georgia Tech started a 1-3 finish in the regular season.

The Tigers rallied to win their first ACC title in 20 years with a 38-10 victory over Virginia Tech. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said the memories of last year?s rise, fall and title win should help the team keep last week?s defeat in perspective.

?We are the same team that had a really good team on the road down 14 and didn?t finish it,? Swinney said. ?Those guys are still here. We know we are capable of being a good football team. That was one game. We have so much opportunity to have a very, very good season.?

Clemson has certainly had its hands full with Boston College since it joined the league in 2005, including losing two of its three trips to Chestnut Hill. The Eagles? first league win came against the Tigers in 2005. Losses to Boston College in 2006 and 2007 cost those Clemson teams trips to the ACC title games both years. And in 2010, a Clemson team seeking to get its season back on track managed only three points on offense in a 16-10 defeat to the Eagles.

?Any edge we can get against this team will be helpful for us because they have so many weapons,? said Boston College linebacker Nick Clancy, who leads the country with more than 14 tackles a game.

The Eagles have a few weapons, too. Quarterback Chase Rettig leads the ACC with 317 yards per game. He?s also tops in ACC total offense. Wideout Alex Amidon is tops in the league with a 122-yard receiving average.

?It?s been a long time since we?ve seen them lead the league in passing,? Swinney said.

Pink Army declares war on breast cancer

By CHRISTY SWIFT | Highlands Today correspondent

Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center wants you to join the Pink Army, but you won't have to go to boot camp or learn to shoot a weapon.

This statewide campaign encourages women to increase awareness about early detection and prevention of breast cancer by completing "missions," earning rewards, and passing the word on to family, friends, and co-workers.

"We want everyone to be a soldier," said Cathy Albritton, director of marketing and community relations at Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center and a breast cancer survivor. "It's a lot of fun."

"Soldiers" can enlist free of charge by visiting www.jointhepinkarmy.com. As a private, each enrollee receives a pink dog tag that entitles the bearer to discounts in 37 local businesses good through Oct. 31.

Privates can move up through the ranks by completing various missions. Recruiting ten or more soldiers earns a T-shirt and the rank of lieutenant. Attending an educational event or sharing a Florida Hospital breast cancer story earns a tumbler and the rank of captain.

Planning a "pink party" for five or more people earns a tote bag and the rank of colonel as well as a gift card once the party has been completed.

Earn the rank of major by scheduling and getting a mammogram at either Florida Hospital or Seascape Imaging and receive a car magnet and mammo charm. Mammograms will be offered at a discounted price of $99 through the end of the year.

The top level of general is earned by recruiting 99 or more soldiers. Generals will receive a gift card.

Florida Hospital Seascape Imaging South, located at 2950 U.S. 27 South, is serving as the local headquarters for the campaign and houses all of the materials needed for completing the missions, such as hosting the breast cancer awareness party.

Soldiers also can donate a mammogram, schedule their own mammogram, find local discounts and more on the website.

The Pink Army Strut, an event being held Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. at Florida Hospital in Sebring is also open to all participants. This "Girls Night Out" will feature mocktails, live music by Lotela Gold, and a swag bag filled with pink goodies. The first 300 women to register will receive a special-edition Vera Bradley wristlet. Registration costs $20, and proceeds will go toward providing mammograms for women in need. To register, visit www.jointhepinkarmy.com and click on "Upcoming Events."

"We are hoping women will get together with a co-worker or friend and come dressed in their craziest pink attire," said Albritton, describing the strut as a "no-sweat walk" through the hospital grounds with stops along the way for mocktails, hand-painted "tattoos," beads and more.

"Declare war on breast cancer and get your mammogram," said Albritton, adding, "When women get screened annually, it decreases cancer deaths."

Former Dolan coach named Rippowam assistant principal

STAMFORD -- The city school board unanimously approved Chrystal Perry, a former literacy coach at Dolan Middle School, as the new assistant principal at Rippowam Middle School.

Perry returns to the district after spending a little more than a year working in the Norwalk public school system. She was named assistant principal at Norwalk's West Rocks Middle School last school year, but due to budget cuts was switched to assistant principal at two of the district's elementary schools this school year.

Before beginning her Norwalk career, Perry was a literacy coach at Dolan Middle School. She is a graduate of the Stamford public school system, and has also worked at Rippowam and Cloonan Middle School as an English teacher and drama coach during her 16-year career, according to Superintendent Winifred Hamilton.

The assistant principal position at Rippowam was opened up over the summer after Bryan Olkowski left the district to pursue a principal opportunity in Windham public schools. He had been named to the Rippowam assistant principal position in the spring after holding the same post at Scofield Magnet Middle School for several years.

After her approval Thursday night, Perry said she was excited to begin working in Stamford, but still needed time to tie up loose ends in Norwalk after a whirlwind application process was completed on Tuesday. The board has not yet announced when Perry will begin acting in her new role.

Two-hour power blackout halts Azeri capital

BAKU (Reuters) - Lightning caused a fire at a power station in Azerbaijan on Friday, blacking out the capital Baku and other parts of the ex-Soviet republic and halting oil refineries, officials said.

Outages left Baku without power for two hours and delayed the opening of the Caspian Sea coast city's subway system, prompting commuters to pack buses in a chaotic rush hour.

Production at offshore oil wells was not affected because they have their own power sources but refineries stopped operations for two hours, a spokesman for state oil company SOCAR said.

Azerbaijan is host to oil companies including Chevron, ExxonMobil and BP, which leads a consortium operating offshore oil and gas fields.

The Emergencies Ministry said the fire broke out shortly before 7 a.m. (10 p.m. EDT on Thursday) at the Mingechevir station, which supplies power to about a third of the country of 9.5 million in the South Caucasus.

A reserve line was switched on, restoring power to Baku and Mingechevir in western Azerbaijan, where the power station is located.

The Airbus A330 aircraft landed safely just after 1 p.m. local time (1200 GMT) with no injuries, said Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, the emergency management director for Lagos state.

Harold Demuren, director-general of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, told The Associated Press that the flight Saturday declared an emergency prior to its arrival to Lagos. Demuren said firefighting equipment and personnel stood by for its arrival at Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

Officials with Qatar Airways could not be immediately reached for comment.

Good News for California Renters and Pets

While it can be difficult for renters with pets to find a home that welcomes dogs or cats, California has taken a step forward for tenants and their pets with the passage of SB1229. California governor Jerry Brown signed this bill which prohibits landlords from requiring renters to declaw or debark their pet as a condition of tenancy. Landlords are also prohibited from advertising the rental property in a way that discourages renters from applying because their pet is not declawed or debarked. California is the first state in the U.S. to enact this humane legislation.

Previously, some landlords included this requirement as a condition of occupancy in an effort to reduce noise and property damage. However, these surgical procedures are not medically necessary and are painful to the pet, and irreversible. Declawing of cats actually involves the amputation of the last bone of the cat?s toe, and is considered inhumane by most experts and is banned in many countries outside of the U.S. Debarking or devocalization is a surgical procedure wherein tissue from the dog?s vocal cords is removed to reduce the volume of the dog?s barking. Pet barking and scratching behaviors can be addressed through training and other measures such as claw clipping.

Landlords who violate the terms of the legislation face civil fines of up to $1,000.00 per pet, to be paid to the pet owner. Landlords still have other options to protect their property, such as a ?pet deposit? which may be used to cover the cost of any property damage caused by the pet, and landlords may still enforce a ?no pets? policy.

(AP) ? Probation officials openly worried about actor Johnny Lewis' mental health and his danger to others in recent months, and this week their worst fears came true.

The man who died a violent death on "Sons of Anarchy" three years ago apparently beat and strangled his landlady and attacked neighbors before falling or leaping to his own death in neighborhood near Hollywood on Wednesday afternoon.

They were the final violent acts of a man who in the previous 10 months had been repeatedly arrested, sent to counseling and had left jail only five days before his demise.

Court records and his attorney detailed attempts to help Lewis but not in time to help 81-year-old Catherine Davis, who neighbors reported screaming inside a home near the outskirts of Los Angeles' Griffith Park. The home had been ransacked, glass was shattered and a dead cat was also found inside, and Lewis' body was found in the driveway.

Lewis' cause of death is pending toxicology results, Coroner's investigative division Lt. Fred Corral said Thursday evening. Davis died from blunt head trauma and manual strangulation, he said.

The deaths came four months after a probation officer expressed grave concerns about Lewis' mental health, writing that he was "very concerned for the well-being of not only the community but that of the defendant."

Court records detail Lewis' descent from January 2012, when he attacked two men and hit them in the head with a bottle, through August, when he acted as his own attorney and pleaded no contest to felony assault.

By that point he had been arrested three times for incidents ranging from trying to break into an occupied home in Santa Monica, Calif., to resisting arrest. He had been sent to treatment programs that specialized in drug and alcohol addiction as well as mental illness.

A May 17 probation report states that "the defendant suffers from some form of chemical dependency, mental health issue and a lack of permanent housing. Given this, (Lewis) will continue to be a threat to any community he may reside."

Another probation officer had written two months earlier, "Obviously defendant's behavior is out of control and needs counseling afforded by a professional."

Lewis remained on supervised probation at the time of his death.

Lewis' attorney Jonathan Mandel said the actor had serious mental issues that seemed to surface fairly recently. He said Lewis' parents and others had tried desperately to help him.

"Johnny Lewis had a lot of problems, a lot of mental problems," Mandel said by phone Thursday. "I recommended treatment for him but he declined it."

He continued, saying: "I give a lot of credit to his parents. They were really strong in trying to help him out. They really went to bat for him, but I guess they just couldn't do enough."

Lewis' career spanned more than a decade, mainly in small roles. He played Ricky in the 2007 movie "AVPR: Aliens vs Predator ? Requiem" and was Dennis "Chili" Childress for two seasons on TV's "The O.C." He also appeared in episodes of such popular television shows as "Boston Public," ''Judging Amy," ''Malcolm in the Middle" and "Drake & Josh."

He was on "Sons of Anarchy" in 2008 and 2009 before his character was killed off.

Kurt Sutter, the show's creator and executive producer, tweeted news of Lewis' death Thursday:

"It was a tragic end for an extremely talented guy, who unfortunately had lost his way," Sutter wrote. "I wish I could say that I was shocked by the events last night, but I was not. I am deeply sorry that an innocent life had to be thrown into his destructive path."

Foulest ads of the campaign season so far

Politically Foul

This week, the biggest foul was committed in the sports arena, not the political one. But that didn't stop candidates from trying to score a dubious touchdown or two.

The Romney campaign attacked President Obama for cutting billions of dollars from Medicare to pay for "Obamacare."

"You pay into Medicare for years, every paycheck. Now, when you need it, Obama cut $716 billion from Medicare," says a new ad from the Romney campaign.

Except the new healthcare law does not cut funds from Medicare. That $716 billion refers to the amount saved by reforming the future rate of growth -- affecting hospitals and health insurance companies, not seniors' benefits.

On the other side of the field, team Obama seized on the 47 percent comment Romney made at a May fundraiser, releasing?an ad claiming that Romney attacked veterans, elderly, and the disabled.

Aside from the fact that Romney himself has admitted to speaking "inelegantly" about the 47 percent of voters who he says won't support him, did he actually attack veterans and old people? No.

In Virginia, jogging moms have become the new soccer moms in an ad from a Virginia-based group hoping to score a few votes from women who voted for Obama in 2008.

"I run to forget, forget about my problems," says a mom running and pushing a baby carriage in the ad. "I voted for Obama, but 'Hope and Change' was just a slogan...the future is getting worse under Obama."

It's not as blatant as belting out, "I love you women!", but still, that's some painful pandering.

Comedian Sarah Silverman played offensive with a video attacking voter ID laws.

"Hey black people, old people, poor people, and students," Silverman?says. "Guess what you all have in common? Lawmakers are trying to --." We can't print what she says, but rest assured, the video sends a clear message that new laws are targeting Democratic demographics.

And, finally, it wouldn't be Politically Foul if we didn't have an outright fumble from Joe Biden. This week, with an assist from his wife.

"I've seen Joe up close," said Jill Biden as she introduced her husband at a campaign event at Dartmouth College. The audience erupted in guffaws, and the blushing Dr. Biden quickly pointed to her notes. "It's in my remarks!"

Tired of killing, tribe resorts to old traditions

The Enga people of Papua New Guinea have long been used to a culture where small-scale wars were common, short-lived and ended in peaceful relations between clans. But in 1990, the younger generation ditched their bows and arrows for shotguns and semiautomatics, and the Enga experienced 20 years of runaway violence that claimed nearly 5,000 lives.

Now, research shows that clan elders have restored peace by using their traditional tribal court system. As a result of the state-sanctioned system, relatively few wars took place in 2010 and 2011, and the death toll per war has dropped dramatically. For example, from 2006 to 2010, 74 percent of wars ended after only one to five deaths, compared with 23 percent of wars from 1991 to 1995.

The results suggest complex societies don't always evolve from simpler societies that are much more violent, as some psychologists and anthropologists contend, researchers said.

"These simple face-to-face societies have very effective means of making peace," said study leader Polly Wiessner, an anthropologist at the University of Utah. "It's when societies coalesce and are driven into larger societies, when they become no longer face-to-face, that these peace mechanisms no longer work."

Escalating wars
There are currently 400,000 to 500,000 Engas. They're divided into 110 tribes, each of which has five to 10 clans. "The clans hold a piece of land and cooperate in exchange, warfare and marriage," Wiessner told LiveScience. [ Image Gallery: Faces of a Threatened Tribe ]

Despite the strong inter-clan ties, Enga history has been marked by occasional wars. These eruptions of violence typically lasted a few days to a few weeks, and served to re-establish power between groups, show a clan's strength or avenge some misdeed.

Around 1850, Enga leaders established a system of compensation to quash postwar violence. In a large, public ceremony, individuals handed over live pigs ? a major form of currency ? and other valuables to their enemies as compensation for deaths.

These "Tee" ceremonies helped form massive exchange networks between clans and tribes. "Part of war was to keep balance between clans so exchange could flow," Wiessner explained.

Papua New Guinea came under Australian colonial rule in the 1950s. Armed administrators kept the peace and disputes were settled in the court rather than on the battlefield. Many Enga traditions ended, including the Tee exchanges.

After gaining independence in 1975, the country established a dual court system. District courts mainly served business needs, while village courts handled local matters. Local leaders were elected as magistrates to preside over the village courts. In 1982, a branch of the village court called Operation Mekim Save (OMS) arose to specifically handle tribal wars.

At the time, battles were still fought with primitive weapons. "They could have had guns, but they didn't want to wipe each other out," Wiessner said. This changed in 1990 when hotheaded youths took power from the elders. They acquired guns from businessmen and hired skilled mercenaries to help in their wars, which could last for months. The number of wars spiked, as did the deaths per war, while unprecedented razing created thousands of refugees. [ 10 Major Innovations that Revolutionized Combat ]

Tide turns
The soldiers were able to keep up their bloody battles for many years because the public supported them, both monetarily and ideologically. But eventually, around 2005, the public got tired of the bloodshed and the hardships felt with funding the wars.

"And so the people turned to the village courts," Wiessner said. "The fighters think they're saving their own group, but when the public said they don't want this, there wasn't much the youth could do."

Wiessner, who scoured data from pre-colonial warfare, 501 recent wars and 129 court sessions, says two other factors helped turn the tide toward peace: church influence (with its Christian ideology of peace) and an effective OMS court branch. In the past, OMS was slow to react when trouble sprang up. Now, magistrates are armed with cellphones and better vehicles. And their methods seem to work.

In 2011, OMS resolved 98 percent of its cases without fines or jail time. Many of the cases ended in compensation rituals seen in the past ? an exchange of pigs during a public ceremony. And just like in the past, the "restorative justice" of the tribal courts appears able to curb further clan hostilities, at least for the time being. "There are almost no wars now," Wiessner said.

The study was published Thursday in the journal Science.

British recession shallower than expected

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's economy contracted less than thought during the second quarter, offering a higher base for an expected return to tepid growth and lifting the pound while supporting share prices.

Other data showed Britain's financial position worsened, although economists said the biggest current account deficit on record was partly because of lower returns on investments in the crisis-hit euro zone.

The Office for National Statistics said on Thursday gross domestic product (GDP) fell 0.4 percent in the three months from April to June compared with the first quarter.

The ONS had previously estimated the fall at 0.5 percent and economists had expected that rate to be unrevised.

Year-on-year, GDP was 0.5 percent down, in line with forecasts and the previous ONS estimate.

The economy has not fully recovered output lost during the financial crisis. It slipped back into recession, according to ONS data, in the final quarter of 2011 as the euro zone debt crisis and British government austerity weighed on output.

"The UK still has a tough job in developing significant sustainable growth, given tighter fiscal policy, still-significant pressures on consumers and soft global growth," IHS Global Insight economist Howard Archer said.

"More stimulus from the Bank of England remains highly likely in the fourth quarter," he said.

The latest data brought GDP more in line with less downbeat business surveys, economists said. Stripping out the hit from the extra public holiday to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's 60 years on the throne, the economy may have even eked out some growth.

A surge in manufacturing, solid retail sales and improving business surveys point to solid growth in the third quarter, when ticket sales for the London Olympics and a recovery of the output lost due to the extra holiday will boost GDP.

BoE policymaker Paul Fisher said in a newspaper interview the economy was almost certain to bounce back during the current quarter with "a very strong gross domestic product number".

Nonetheless, most economists expected the central bank would extend its asset purchases in November, when it has completed its current 50 billion pound round of government bond buybacks, as the economy remains fragile and dangers from the euro zone crisis loom large.

A meaningful recovery remains elusive despite a string of government measures to unblock lending to businesses and consumers, with a Reuters poll finding a consensus forecast for 1.2 percent GDP growth next year after a drop in 2012.

The pound was up 0.2 percent on a trade-weighted basis at 2:00 p.m. British time, while the blue-chip FTSE 100 stock index was 0.3 percent higher.

INCOME RISE

A 3.0 percent fall in construction output remained the main drag on the economy in the second quarter.

Household spending fell 0.2 percent, but real disposable income rose 1.9 percent, the sharpest increase in three years. The savings ratio increased to 6.7 percent from 6.0 percent in the first three months of 2012.

The government and the Bank hope falling inflation will provide cash-strapped households with more money to spend and boost consumption.

The Bank said British banks should take advantage of any lull in euro zone turmoil to tap markets for fresh capital to bolster their defences.

Second-quarter current account data showed Britain's deficit with the rest of the world jumped to a record high 20.8 billion pounds, or 5.4 percent of GDP, as investment income and goods exports slumped.

"The latest deterioration can be pinned on developments in the euro area's sovereign debt crisis," Nomura economist Philip Rush said. "The poor relative return on the holdings of UK residents in the euro area has been a growing weight on the UK's net external position."

IEEE, a worldwide organization of engineers, computer scientists and researchers, inadvertently exposed the usernames and passwords of 100,000 of its members, nearly 25 percent of its total?membership.

The discovery was made by Radu Dragusin, a teaching assistant in the University of Copenhagen's Department of Computer Science, on Sept. 18.

"Among the almost 100,000 compromised users are Apple, Google, IBM, Oracle and Samsung employees, as well as researchers from NASA, Stanford and many other places," Dragusin writes on?his blog.?

Dragusin said he did not make the "raw data" available to anyone but IEEE. In a statement to NBC News Wednesday, the organization confirmed the problem, but said it has "conducted a thorough investigation and the issue has been addressed and resolved."

The IEEE is also "in the process of notifying?those who may have been affected," a spokesperson for the group said, advising them to change their passwords, and apologizing to members for what happened.

Lest you think that engineers and scientists would?probably have lockbox-tight passwords, that doesn't appear to be the case. Dragusin did an analsyis of the exposed passwords, and surprisingly, some?of them were the?all-too-common and not-advised choices?including: "password," "123456," "abcd1234," "12345678" and "1234567890."

In describing what he does, Dragusin says he is working on a specialized search engine to help "clinicians aid in the diagnosis of rare diseases. For the future, I am looking for something exciting to do." It looks like he may have found it.

Why our thinking about mentoring is all wrong - Fortune Management

FORTUNE -- When it comes to mentoring the next generation of business owners and startup founders, leaders of entrepreneurship organizations have made a huge mistake. We have simplified a complex term -- "mentorship" -- into a generic synonym for dishing out advice.

I'm guilty of it myself. It's all too easy to say to young people, "Oh, you want to succeed? Get a mentor." We mean well, and offering advice is a vital aspect of mentorship, but it is not a zero-sum game, and its benefits are not guaranteed (and often not measured at all).

Frankly, we can't keep touting mentorship as a means to spur business and job creation without understanding what it should look like. Mentorship is about taking the wisdom and brainpower of others and imparting it to those who need it most. Solid mentors are part sounding board and part guide. They are the critical background players in many a success story.

MORE:?Goldman Sachs' board: Clubby as it ever was

But if we really want mentorship to prepare American workers for an increasingly complex economy, then it must undergo a shift from a generic concept to a highly individualized experience that can be scaled to serve tens of millions of people. Here are five ways we can do exactly that:

1. Connect those who know with those who do

I sat down for dinner recently with Naveen Jain, who founded startups Moon Express, inome, and InfoSpace. As a trustee at the X PRIZE Foundation and Singularity University, he's at the forefront of what's being called "entrepreneurial philanthropy." From 3D printing to advanced genetics, what I learned in that hour with Jain was extraordinary. Information like this shouldn't be a privilege of the few.

Yet entrepreneurs are rarely exposed to scientific innovation at this level. Instead, many are only encouraged to get mentorship from other entrepreneurs, enticed by a brand of tech entrepreneurship characterized by short-term wins and big payouts.

We need to start connecting those with knowledge -- scientists, researchers, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) professionals, and philanthropists -- to aspiring and active entrepreneurs.

2. Think globally, but enhance indirect mentorship locally?

The rising cost of living and other macroeconomic forces are shifting many entrepreneurs' focus to local communities. Vocational schools and community colleges can help connect mentees to the local community. But we must also teach entrepreneurship with public-private partnerships. We need the next generation of entrepreneurs to create jobs in their hometowns. Entrepreneurship programs, educators, government organizations, and developers will need to band together to attract and keep talented workers. The nonprofit Idea Village has done this with great success in New Orleans.

MORE:?Looking ahead, optimism prevails. We can't help it.

Programs like General Assembly connect a broad spectrum of disconnected groups -- city governments, entrepreneurs, hackers -- to provide indirect mentorship through exposure and collaboration.

3. Recognize the value of peer relationships

A fantastic mentor doesn't necessarily have to be older than their mentee. Indeed, peer-to-peer learning is one of the most effective tools we have for leadership development. So why aren't we making a bigger effort to use it in all of our mentorship initiatives?

4. Personalize pairings, measure outcomes, and increase access

While one-on-one mentorship is valuable, relying on in-person, business-to-business relationships alone is not realistic. As a result, many organizations, like Junior Achievement and Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), are shifting to an increasingly digital model. Likewise, my organization launched a program called #StartupLab with Citi so we could build a social layer on top of existing organizations (including JA and NFTE).

By supplementing traditional models with next-generation technology and user feedback, organizations can work together to personalize mentorship, measure outcomes, and, ideally, make a positive impact faster. The more targeted we can be when we connect mentees to mentors (e.g., offering precise mentoring that directly fits the needs of an African-American female 30-something retail entrepreneur expanding to a second location in Seattle), the more effective mentorship programs will become.

5. Start early

As student loan debt mounts and post-college employment outcomes remain dismal -- 63 percent of Millennials are working low-skill retail jobs, pocketing under $30,000 annually -- Gen Y and their younger siblings are painfully aware that their parent's linear path to success is disappearing.

MORE:?Companies turn to brain games to tackle work stress

This is why exposure to entrepreneurial thinking -- even as early as kindergarten ? is critical. Not because we expect our nation's five-year olds to go out and build the next big business, but because that same student a decade later will be better equipped to handle the future workplace if he or she has a sense of what's coming.

The earlier we provide mentorship to aspiring entrepreneurs, students, and future CEOs, the better chance we have at putting an end to the chronic cycle of underemployment, joblessness, and low-wage work dogging many Americans today.

Get Girlfriends In High School - 6 Useful Tips

A lot of guys find their teenage years hard owing to the effects of their raging hormones. As a consequence of adolescence guys usually experience a sudden burst of growth with several physical changes for instance appearance of facial hair and unsightly pimples. It is also the time when most guys start to think about girls and start worrying about how to get a girl to like them. Girls are a lot different than guys and it takes a bit of knowledge and practice to find out how to communicate with them properly. Finding the right information and guidance on how to get a girlfriend in high school can be very helpful for those who don't have any idea how to deal with girls. Guys that are serious about trying to learn how to get a girlfriend in high school need to do some research to understand what girls are interested in and what they expect from them. Guys need to learn certain things which can help them to get more attractive and increase self confidence so that they can deal with girls successfully. In the next few paragraphs we are going to discuss a couple of recommendations that should help you understand what a girl expects from a guy and how you need to go about finding a girlfriend at high school .

1. Hygiene Tips: The sudden surge in the hormonal activity in their bodies might cause many guys to sweat a lot even when they are not participating in sport activities. Sweating a lot could cause the body to smell bad and no girl is going to desire to go out with a guy that smells bad! Having a shower everyday morning and after intense physical exercise is a must. Brushing teeth well might help to avoid mouth odor and hair should be kept clean and properly groomed. Making use of products such as deodorants, mouthwash and aftershave lotion is also a great idea.

2. Quick Clothing Tips: It doesn't really matter what type of garments you wear, but be sure that they are dirt free and fresh smelling. Guys who are grimy and shabby are not going to get any closer to females. Launder clothes regularly and wear fresh clothes after showering.

3. Get Out and About: It could be hard for you to befriend a girl and get her to like you if you are going to spend a lot of time with your male friends or watching tv shows at home. You're never going to find a girlfriend if you don't go out and meet some girls!. If you move out and meet many girls everyday, you would have a better chance to find a girlfriend for yourself. Just move out to places where you have better chances of meeting many girls, for example parties, get-togethers, meetings, social occasions etc and try to get them into conversation. We'll cover some tips on that next.

4. Just Talk Naturally - Many guys are more worried about physical appearance and hence do not pay much attention to what they should talk to girls. For most guys the best approach is to try to relax and then bring up any subject that interests him. Once the girl responds to him he can find out what she likes to talk about by asking her a few questions about herself. Allowing the girl to speak more and listening to her keenly could help a guy to create the impression that he is keen on her.

5. Let Yourself Have Fun: Practically everybody likes to laugh and have fun and girls are not any exception. Guys need to stay calm and relaxed and they should try to make friends with as many girls as possible before selecting the best girl to be as a girlfriend. It will be much easier for a guy to get a girlfriend if he just concentrates on being himself.

Obama launches new tax offensive against Romney

(AP) ? President Barack Obama's campaign is launching a new offensive Monday against Republican Mitt Romney, blasting the GOP nominee for criticizing Americans who don't pay income taxes without having "come clean" about his own.

The campaign started the new push with a television advertisement, its first spot using Romney's comments that 47 percent of voters pay no income tax, and believe they are victims and entitled to government assistance. The ad was to begin airing in Ohio ? a crucial swing state where Romney was campaigning this week ? but was also expected to be part of the campaign's final push elsewhere between now and Election Day.

"Maybe instead of attacking others on taxes, he should come clean on his," the ad's narrator says of Romney.

The 30-second spot signaled that Obama would keep making Romney's taxes a campaign issue. The Republican hopeful has released only two years of tax information about his personal fortune and finances.

Six weeks out from the election, Obama holds a slim lead over Romney in most battleground states. The Republican is seeking to right his campaign following a rough stretch that included the release of his secretly recorded remarks about the 47 percent and criticism that he's not campaigning hard enough for the White House.

Romney acknowledged Sunday that he was trailing the president in several key states. But he promised to spend less time courting donors and more time with voters.

"I know that in the coming six weeks they're very unlikely to stay where they are today," Romney said of the polls.

The Republican was scheduled to campaign Monday in Colorado, where aides added a rally in an attempt to deflect the criticism from within his own party. Romney was also to join running mate Paul Ryan in Ohio on Tuesday for a bus tour.

Romney senior adviser Ed Gillespie said the GOP ticket would give voters more specific details on their economic plans in the campaign's closing weeks.

"Voters will get to know more not only about the specifics of the Romney plan, but how it will benefit them," he said. "A real recovery will improve the quality of life for working Americans, and lift millions out of poverty by making jobs available again."

Obama will spend Monday and Tuesday tending to official duties at the United Nations. But his condensed schedule at the annual gathering of world leaders underscored that his focus is largely on the campaign.

Voters in more than two dozen states are already casting ballots in early voting for the presidential election, meaning everything the candidates do now could influence votes already being cast.

Obama's campaign sees Romney's remarks about 47 percent of Americans as an opportunity to solidify its lead, building on the campaign's efforts over the summer to paint the Republican as a multi-millionaire elitist who is out of touch with middle class Americans. The campaign's new 30-second ad opens with a video of Romney telling donors at a private fundraiser about the 47 percent of Americans he believes will vote for Obama no matter what.

"My job is not to worry about those people," Romney says in the video, which was taped without his knowledge.

A narrator in the Obama ad responds: "Isn't it the president's job to worry about everyone?"

Romney said he was talking to donors about campaign strategy and making the point that about 47 percent of voters won't cast their ballots for him. He has insisted following the video's release that as president, he would work for all Americans.

The Obama ad also references details about Romney's personal tax returns, including his disclosure that he and wife Ann Romney paid an effective tax rate in 2011 of 14.1 percent. That rate is lower than millions of middle-income Americans, but actually more than Romney had to pay.

The tax documents released Friday show Romney, one of the wealthiest candidates ever to seek the presidency, paid nearly $2 million in federal taxes on $13.7 million in income. Romney's income was from investment returns, which are taxed at a lower rate than income that comes mostly from wages.

Republicans argued that it was time for Democrats to stop focusing on Romney's taxes now that he has released his 2011 returns.

Romney released his 2010 returns in January, but he continues to decline to disclose returns from previous years ? including those while he worked at Bain Capital, the private equity firm he co-founded. The Obama campaign and other Democrats note that Romney's father, George Romney, released a dozen years of returns when he ran for president.

The Republican nominee has made clear that he's looking to next month's three presidential debates to help him get on track. The first debate is on Oct. 3.

Romney told reporters Sunday that Obama has been "trying to fool people into thinking that I think things I don't. And that ends I think during the debates."

And he blamed his recent struggles, in part, on what he described as a series of factually inaccurate attacks from Obama.

"He keeps on running these things even though he knows they are wrong," Romney said. "Whether it's on the auto industry, whether it's on taxes, whether it's on social issues, what he's saying about my positions is simply not true."

Boat Trip on the River Thames

Boat Trip on the River Thames

Although the new academic year started off on the wrong foot, as a result of the unfinished construction works at the Marylebone Campus, the University of Westminster earned back our trust by organising a fun-filled, sun-filled and information-filled boat ride on the River Thames. This river crusade took place on the 19th of September, 2012. More than 300 students, 6 FANS and our BA Business Management Course Leader, Phil Sainter and Year 1 Leader, Kamala Balu, embarked on a river cruise like no other on the famous ?Silver Sturgeon? River Boat.

The start of our day at The Savoy Pier

This sterling vessel arrived at the Savoy Pier at around 10:00, and after everyone had registered and boarded, we commenced our maiden voyage promptly at 10:30. During this once in a lifetime sea excursion, we were able to socialise and mingle with other Freshers. Surrounded by succulent mini burgers, mouth-watering seafood paella, sweet fruit juices and crunchy vegetarian sandwiches, students had no excuse but to sit back, relax and enjoy the historic scenery as the boat slowly meandered down the River Thames.

Cruising on the River Thames

Although it was a wonderful event, some students postulated that this could have been a tactical plot utilised by management to force us to listen to the long introduction to the BA Management Course Leader, and to endure a general knowledge quiz that no one seemed to know the answers to. Nevertheless, this big ?Sorry for the construction delays? treat paid off big time and was a wonderful idea. Hopefully with enough encouragement, our superiors may consider making this an annual event ^_^!

Boat trip was a great way to meet new students

So Japan Is Making a Fantasy Anime About the Old Nintendo-Sega Console Wars

Seriously. Apparently there's a manga called?Aoi Sekai no Ch?shin de, about the land of Consume and the war between the Segua Kingdom and the Ninterudo Empire, and now its going to be an anime. ANN says?of the plat: "Segua now finds itself on the defensive, but an unlikely hero has risen in the form of Gear, a boy who brags about his breakneck speed. Gear helps turn the tide of the war." Gear is obviously Sonic (spelled phonetically as Gia in the image above), and as you see, this is totally bonkers. That's clearly Mario as the dictator-ish Marcse, Luigi as Greege, Kirby as Carwai, Samus as Saroid, Pikachu as Pirika -- I can't decide who the Sega characters are, but I'm hoping you'll help in the comments. Because this is pretty much the awesomest thing I've ever heard of. Thanks to Kevin L. for the tip!

Marx Toys Still Rules The Roost ? What Ever It Is

Marx toys are one of the most sought after ones by kids even today. Girls may have several options when it comes to toys but soldiers are especially for boys who love to play war games with them. It is a great achievement by the company that the toys played first during early 1920s continue to have a following till today. The Marx brand has diversified over the years. However, none of the existing Marx-cos can arguably come close to the original Louis Marx and Company. The stable of Marx toys includes soldiers, dinosaurs, mechanical ones, guns, dolls, cars and trains.

Marx toy soldiers are one of the hottest selling products. These miniature toys are found in many forms and size, but mainly in green and grey colors. The soldiers are mold in military uniforms with war weapons in hand. They are generally made of hard plastic or rubber and not harmful for kids at all. By playing with Marx toys, kids get a feel of the real-life scenario of a soldier and also get motivated to take up Army as a profession. There are a lot of scheming and planning to be done to win points or battles. However, the violence part the game that involves killing and shooting has been condemned by many. But being just a game, its popularity has never diminished and it still continues to be manufactured.

Marx toy soldiers are mostly ?Made in China? and make it to shelves of various stores across the world. The popularity of the brand made it a name and there are many companies today that sell toys in the same patter. This will nullify any lead poisoning and thereby, takes away worries of on safety aspects. So, toy soldiers that have made it to Toy Story movie are a magnificent showpiece to have just for the sake of collection.

Gas prices, cars push US retail sales up 0.9 pct.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. retail sales rose in August from July because consumers paid higher gas prices and bought more cars and trucks. They were more cautious elsewhere, suggesting the weak economy has made many selective about spending.

Retail sales increased a seasonally adjusted 0.9 percent, the Commerce Department said Friday. Gas station sales jumped 5.5 percent, the most in nearly three years and a reflection of sharp price increases. Demand for autos increased 1.7 percent.

Outside those categories, sales rose only 0.1 percent. That's below July's 0.8 percent gain. Sales at general merchandise, clothing and electronic stores fell. Sales at grocery stores, sporting goods stores and online retailers were unchanged.

Gasoline sales are heavily influenced by price, and auto sales represent major purchases. Excluding those categories offers more clarity on consumers' willingness to spend.

"This has to go down as a weak report," said Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics. "Most of the spending in August was on products that households have to buy, such as gasoline, not items they like to buy, such as new TVs."

The retail sales report is the government's first look each month at consumer spending, which drives roughly 70 percent of economic activity. Consumer spending has increased at a slow pace this year. That has dragged on the economy and kept businesses from hiring.

Higher gas costs also drove up consumer prices by the most in three years, the Labor Department said in a separate report. But excluding energy prices, inflation was mild.

Consumer prices rose 0.6 percent in August, the department said. Gas prices increased 9 percent and accounted for 80 percent of the increase. Outside food and energy, prices rose only 0.1 percent.

Overall consumer prices have increased 1.7 percent in past year. That's well below the Federal Reserve's inflation target.

Lower inflation will allow the Fed to stick with programs announced Thursday aimed at lifting the economy. If the Fed were worried that prices are rising too fast, it might have to raise interest rates.

On Thursday, the Federal Reserve said it would purchase $40 billion of mortgage-backed securities a month until the economy and job market show signs of steady improvement. Fed officials also said they would keep short-term interest rates low, even after the acceleration of any economic recovery.

Rising gas prices could make consumers more cautious about spending in the coming months. Gas prices averaged $3.87 a gallon nationwide on Friday, 16 cents higher than a month ago and just 7 cents below the 2012 average high.

Automakers earlier this month reported the best sales in three years, after seeing rising demand for pickup trucks.

The government's retail sales data contrasted with reports from the nation's largest retail chains. Many said things picked up in August, driven partly by back-to-school purchases. Sales at 18 retail chains rose last month by the most since March.

Sales at Target rose 4.2 percent and increased 5.1 percent at Macy's. Gap Inc. posted a 9 percent jump in sales.

Employers added only 96,000 jobs last month, below the 141,000 added in July and far below the average gains of 226,000 in the first three months of the year.

The unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent, but only because the number of people in the work force shrank.

The economy is growing too slowly to spur greater job gains. The economy expanded at a 1.7 percent annual pace in the April-June quarter. That's down from 2 percent in the first quarter and 4.1 percent in the final three months of last year.
